Sankofa Independent School Design recently convened the first curriculum design retreat for Chosen Preparatory Academy — the independent college-preparatory secondary school currently being developed in Houston.
The retreat opened with a Friday evening gathering centered on shared purpose and the collaborative spirit that will define this institution. Saturday brought a full day of structured academic design, with thirteen educators contributing their expertise as the academic vision for Chosen Prep began taking clearer, more deliberate shape.
Together, participants developed foundational profiles for the Chosen Prep sixth grader, graduate, and educator. They examined the long-term implications of AP and Honors curriculum models and began establishing academic standards for excellence, innovation, and rigor — standards informed by and grounded in the Black Diasporic intellectual tradition.
Two additional curriculum design retreats are scheduled later this year. As the academic framework continues to take form, it will be integrated with operational and financial planning in service of a single goal: building a rigorous, thoughtfully designed institution from the ground up — one that prepares students to move through the world with intellectual authority, moral clarity, and purpose.
